This summer a brand new flying show and social event for the paragliding and paramotoring community is hitting the UK calendar.

Situated in a picturesque country-central location and in the landing fields of the popular paragliding site Llangollen, North Wales will be Parafest 2015.

The camp and showground are at the base of Llangollen hill and there are plenty of other free-flying sites in the surrounding area that are within easy driving distance. We also have a flying field for paramotors and plenty of unrestricted airspace.

With paramotor and paragliding trader’s and schools exhibiting, a market area, kids zone, chainsaw carving, other sideshow attractions, caterers, all- weekend camping and a bar with live music in the marquee on Friday and Saturday nights Parafest 2015 will be a weekend to remember whatever the weather.

ANR (automatic noise reduction) Paramotor Helmet

ANR: Automatic Noise Reduction or sometimes called ENC: Electronic Noise Cancelling. Either is a good description of what is happening. Typical paramotor helmet with ear muffs or headset are PNR: Passive Noise Reduction, this is the foam filled ear muffs that protect your ears from the engine & prop noise.

Combine this PNR with ANR into a Paramotor Helmet and you get a double wammy effect on reducing engine & prop noise.

Standard PNR ear muffs reduce noise by 18-30dB (decibels) depending on the brand and intended use. Most paramotor headsets I have tried are rated around the 26-28dB mark.

Adding the ANR reduces low frequency noise by a further 18-24dB, added to the 28dB protection from the PNR we are in for a quiet ride. The ANR really only works for the low frequency noise i.e.: the engine drone, prop thump. On test the effect really is surprising, with the flick of a switch and in a moment a big reduction in noise, the feeling of being in a sound proof room comes over you.

Combine that to a radio headset push to talk communications with a noise cancelling mic and iPod input, flying PPG becomes even more luxurious.

Not all ANR systems are the same, all I can say is this one works very well. Our test paramotor was a Vittorazi Moster.

 

EOS 100 Paramotor Engine for PPG 9.5kg with 50kg Thrust

The Austrian made EOS 100 Paramotor engine.

100cc Belt drive with a clutch, easy pull start engine, competes head to head with the well known Top80 and other engines in this class. Build quality is high, economy is good, power is 50kg + category, the engine feels small and I wouldn’t believe the delivery box even contained an engine. Air Conception produce Titanium Exhaust for 130cc engine further reducing weight

Air Conception the well known French Paramotor manufacturer has produced a Titanium Exhaust for their Ultimate 130cc engine, making this little power plant even lighter. The engine that was already one of the lightest power to weight units available is now only 10.5kg when fitted with the titanium exhaust, with specs of 25hp & claimed thrusts up to 68kg. Not only lighter the titanium exhaust is reported to be stronger and quieter.

Adding the titanium exhaust brings the complete weight of the Ultimate 130 titanium paramotor down to a mere 19.5kg. We can say it is a nice looking exhaust and a welcome departure from the common black painted exhausts we are used to seeing. Can be seen in the UK at Custom-Air.

Bailey Hornet 2 Stroke Twin Cylinder Paramotor Engine

Since the beginning of the year Bailey Aviation have been designing and developing a new PPG 2 stroke engine, known as the Hornet. The Hornet has been designed due to many customer requests for an ‘Ultimate’ 2 stroke engine that is powerful, lightweight and reliable.

The engine is a twin cylinder design that is very compact and lightweight. It will fit in the ‘higher power’ end of the market and be primarily aimed at slalom competition flying.

Utilising a helical gear reduction system, centrifugal clutch and manual pull start arrangement, power output is around 28-30hp (TBC) and all up weight is around 15.5kg.

APCO release the slimline bullet riser to reduce drag

The bullet riser shown left has been designed to produce a reduced area to the direction of travel and airflow.

 

APCO state:

Bullet Riser – a revolutionary design of riser. (In the best APCO tradition thinking outside the box)

The riser which will set the future design for the industry – reduction of riser drag by 80% and more.
Its drop shaped branches produce only a fraction of the drag produced by regular risers. It is still made from the same 25mm. width webbing, butshaped into a tear drop profile – easy to understand and handle.
